Headlines: Marketing VS. Procurement, Walmart’s Suppliers, and SAP Drama

We’re tearing into what’s trending in and around e-procurement, so that you don’t have to.

Marketing VS. Procurement: The Awkwardness Continues

I often overhear our account and sales people here at Coupa talking about how the Procurement Professionals and CFOs they talk to frequently ask if our e-procurement product can help them alleviate some of the pain points they have with Marketing Services. It seems Marketing and Procurement find it challenging to work together. Coming from an ad agency background myself, I can see how the two may be odds.

When I was an Assoc. Creative Director, I would work hard to concept a killer big idea, then pitch my ideas to the client, and finally sell in a campaign. By the end of this process, a creative team wants to be able to work with key vendors and supplies. But then purchasing would come in and enforce a three-bid process that would inevitably exclude the most qualified vendors (who came with a higher pricetag). This was the cause of much belly aching amongst my creative team. The cartoon, below, does a good job at encapsulating the view from a Marketing perspective.

Of course, from a Procurement perspective things look very different. Many Marketers appear to be completely uninterested in understanding negotiations, and how Procurement can work with them to negotiate better deals. But according to this article from the Procurement Leaders blog, Marketers who see the involvement of Procurement in the way companies buy marketing services as simply a by-product of lean financial times may be in for a big shock. Take a look.

Walmart Suppliers: Cut Global Procurement Headcount

Wal-Mart’s decision to cut its global procurement headcount by over 250 has got a lot of people speculating on the motivations behind the change. Aside from the sheer cost savings possibilities associated with cutting out the supply middlemen and integrating direct and indirect procurement processes, some are asking if the decision had anything to do with either Walmart’s recall challenges or China’s new labor contract law.

SAP drama at Sapience

Apparently, this year’s Sapience was bordering on hostile. Many financial analysts have been debating whether it was straight-up Anti-SAP. This is a must read article by Jon Reed on the weird circumstances around the event, and whether or not it was somehow rigged, at least in part, by Netsuite. Dennis Howlett writes a great article on the so-called Netsuite-SAP SaaS “shoot out” that went down; he remains impartial and honest in trying to track the politics that may have instigated the shoot out. Could all this drama be somehow related to SAP’s new two-tiered approach to service? Read it and decide for yourself.
